Don’t Be (Too) Offended by Returned Gifts
Or maybe you should be. Have you given a gift with the thought to change the recipient? You know what I mean – giving a non-baker a book on how to make the perfect pie crust, a primer on Mandarin to a self-avowed monolinguist, or a pair of running shoes to a couch potato? Or given a gift that you would (or will) appreciate, like a gift certificate for your favorite restaurant to your spouse, or season tickets for your favorite team?
Don’t be surprised when gifts such as these end up in the return pile. People interpret gifts, and believe me, they are hearing your subtext loud and clear. Give a gift that they will want, not the they you want them to be. Enjoy your holiday season!
